Pass On the Light

For many of us, formation began at home, long before we knew what the word meant.

It may have been a mother teaching us to pray, “Gentle Jesus, meek and mild,” a father leading the family in prayer, or a grandparent teaching us to make the Sign of the Cross. These simple but important moments are the Domestic Church at work, with the family serving as the first place where faith is encountered, nurtured and passed from one generation to another.

But our formation does not end at home.

As we grow, others within the wider Church help to nurture what was first planted there. Catechists prepare us for the Sacraments. Teachers help us understand and live our faith. Youth leaders accompany young people at important stages in their lives. Clergy, religious and lay ministers help us deepen our relationship with Christ and understand what it means to live as His disciples.

But who helps to form those who are helping to form others?

Across our Archdiocese, many men and women generously answer the call to serve. They give their time, knowledge and talents to accompany others, often without expecting anything in return.

A willingness to serve, however, must be supported by the preparation needed to serve well.

Catechists, for example, require ongoing formation in the faith, as well as training in appropriate teaching methods, safeguarding and the responsibilities associated with working with children and vulnerable persons. Our youth leaders must be prepared to accompany young people through the realities they face today. Teachers and others involved in ministry also require opportunities to deepen their knowledge, strengthen their skills and grow in their own faith.

The Gospel is freely given, and those who answer the call to serve give generously of themselves. Preparing and equipping them for that service, however, requires resources.

Training programmes must be organised. Facilitators, materials and appropriate resources must be provided. Opportunities for ongoing formation must be made available so that those entrusted with serving others can do so responsibly and effectively.

This is where your contribution to the Archbishop’s Appeal Feast of Christ the King Collection can make a difference.

This year, the collection will help support formation for youth leaders, teachers, catechists, and those serving migrant and refugee communities across the Archdiocese.

Your contribution helps equip people to serve others, and what they receive through formation can, in turn, touch the lives of many more.
