Sometimes, People Just Need Someone to Help

Most people do not expect to find themselves needing help.

A family may be managing comfortably until a fire destroys their home. Heavy rainfall and flooding can damage belongings accumulated over many years. The loss of employment can suddenly make groceries, rent and other basic expenses difficult to meet. A young mother may find herself without the support she expected, while a migrant or refugee may be trying to establish a new life with very limited resources.

Circumstances can change quickly and, when they do, people sometimes need practical support to help them through a difficult period.

This is an important part of the mission supported by the Archbishop’s Appeal.

Through the generosity of donors, the Appeal helps the Church respond to practical needs within communities across Trinidad and Tobago. This can include assistance with food, clothing, shelter and other basic necessities, as well as support for programmes and organisations working directly with vulnerable people.

Importantly, this assistance is not reserved only for Catholics.

The Church’s call to serve extends to all God’s people, regardless of religious affiliation. Whether someone is experiencing hunger, has lost a home to fire or flooding, or is facing another difficult circumstance, our response is guided by the dignity of the person and the need before us. This understanding is central to the work of the Archbishop’s Appeal.

The Appeal also supports initiatives that address needs beyond immediate relief. Sometimes helping someone means providing an opportunity that can change the direction of his or her life.

Support for education, vocational development and programmes for young people can provide skills and opportunities that lead towards greater independence. Programmes in areas such as agriculture, pan and art allow children and young people to discover abilities, develop discipline and participate in positive activities.

The Appeal also helps support the work of the Archdiocesan Commissions, which provide formation, family support, youth development and other services. Catholic schools and important heritage sites are among the other areas that benefit from funds raised through the Appeal.

These may appear to be very different areas of work, but they are connected by one purpose: enabling the Church to respond to the needs of people and communities.

This is why every contribution to the Archbishop’s Appeal matters.

A donor may never know which family received assistance after a fire. The person who contributed towards the Appeal may never meet the young person who benefited from a programme or see the classroom that was repaired during the school vacation.

But the impact is still real.

It is also important to remember that the need for this work continues throughout the year. For the Archbishop’s Appeal to respond effectively, it needs the ongoing support of individuals, families and organisations who believe in the Church’s responsibility to serve.

Today, you may be the person in a position to help. At another point in life, it could be someone you know who needs that support.

When you contribute to the Archbishop’s Appeal, you help ensure that when someone in our community needs a helping hand, the Church is better positioned to respond.

Sometimes, people just need someone to help.

Through your generosity, we can.
